International Academy of Storytelling – Courses

Celebrating Ten Years of our Academy Courses – Completed 70 batches.

The Academy Course, set up as a training wing of Kathalaya Trust, was established in 1998 with the vision of “Making a Positive Social Change in Society using Storytelling as a Tool of Culture and Learning.” It comprises Oral and Aural traditions that have been handed down to us through generations, informing us of ancient and modern  knowledge systems, Time, Cultures, Myths and Legends, Folklore Traditions, Legends, Sayings, Rituals, and Art Forms.

Aim of the Course:

Course Contents for the Beginner’s Course – Level 1
3 days

  • Listening and Types of Listening – the 3Rs and 4 pillars of storytelling
  • What, Why, How, When, and Where of Telling
  • Elements, Textures, Feelings, Emotions, Colors of Storytelling
  • Telling Techniques – Voice, Body Language, Sounds, and Tone
  • Collection of a minimum of 50 stories – Reflections, Activities, and Observations
  • Story Web – Looking at stories from within/A healing journey
  • Presentation skills
  • “Out of the Box” – New ways of thinking and creating stories 

Course contents for the Diploma Course- Level 2-
4 days and 6 to 12 months of project work

  • Genres of Storytelling and Types of Stories – History, Evolution and Stories for Each Segment
  • Storyboard – THE WAY – From Reading to Telling and Telling to Reading
  • Puppetry or any other skill for storytelling 
  • Practical classroom presentations
  • Storytelling for the Corporatesector
  • Music and folklore in storytelling
  • Story structures
  • Project work, interviews, documentation and submissions
  • Collection of a minimum of 50 stories – Reflections, Activities, and Observations

Your Diploma will be awarded on submission of the same affiliated to the University of Sweden and Scottish Storytelling Centre, University of Edinburgh

Professional academicians and storytellers will be facilitators and evaluators for the course.

We also conduct our course at your location, if there are at least 15 to 20 participants.

We have organised courses at Japan, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, Scotland, Brazil, Poland, Denmark, UK, and USA.
We have also introduced Storytelling as a credit course for The Azim Premji University and The University of Gothenburg, Sweden

ELIGIBILITY FOR THE BEGINNER’S COURSE

Adults, teachers, NGOs, Parents, academicians, Principals, Management heads, corporate, theatre professionals, Art connoisseurs, professionals in any field, business heads, counsellors and students aspiring to take storytelling as a profession above 18 YEARS OF AGE – Preferably graduates in any field.

ELIGIBILITY FOR THE DIPLOMA COURSE

Only those who have completed the Beginner’s course are eligible for the Diploma course.

 PROFILE OF THE TRAINER-GEETA RAMANUJAM

 Geeta Ramanujam besides being an internationally renowned storyteller is an educator, academician, and administrator. She is the Executive Director of Kathalaya Trust which is the culmination of her vision and wisdom. Geeta uses storytelling as an effective educational and cultural tool in many leading educational institutions in India and abroad.

Geeta Ramanujam is the founder of Kathalaya and an Ashoka Fellow. She has also established and founded the Academy of Storytelling; the only globally recognized Academy for Storytelling in the World. She has had storytelling performances at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, UK; International festival at Brazil; Storywood festival at Sweden; World Tales Festival, Poland; the International Storytelling Center, USA; and many other festivals. She is also the Indian Coordinator for the International Storytelling Network –RIC besides being the Indian coordinator of the Indian Storytelling Network.

Geeta uses storytelling as an effective educational and cultural tool in training for parents, teachers, NGOs and corporate sectors both in India and abroad. Over 70,000 people have undergone her training programs.
